It’s Me!
Most of us are familiar with the song, it’s me, it’s me, it’s me oh Lord, standing in the need of prayer, not my mother, not my father…well…you know the rest. ????
We always need prayer. However, today, I want to take a different approach to those words.
It’s me, it’s me, it’s me O Lord! I am holding myself back, making excuses, playing the victim, procrastinating, refusing to leave my comfort zone or blaming others for my past/present/future. Oftentimes, we can be our own worst enemy when it comes to reaching our full potential.
Acknowledging that it’s me, shows that you are taking ownership. Me is singular and although someone else may be fully or partially responsible for your current state, ultimately me and God get to determine the outcome. There is only one person required for making a change and that’s me, which I think is wonderful news!
Last month’s blog was about being made whole and I discussed some of the reasons that we live broken and unfulfilled lives as Christians. Well today, I want to dig a little deeper and discuss how we can be the cause of our setbacks and lack of progress.
First of all, I believe, self-sabotage can play a huge role in our lives. It can determine our experiences, our belief about ourselves and what we think we’re capable of. We intentionally and even sometimes unintentionally stay stuck so our lives remain the same year after year. All the while, we have a laundry list of people and circumstance to blame; however, our name should be at the top of that list! We want better but don’t think we deserve it or can achieve it so our behavior cancels out the very things we desire.
In the words of Alyce P. Cornyn-Selby: “Self-sabotage is when we say we want something and then go about making sure it doesn’t happen.” (Ouch!)
I want to share a story that I feel gives a great depiction of self-sabotage……taken from: http://agilelifestyle.net/self-sabotage
Once upon a time, there was an eagle who lived like a chicken. His owner loved the eagle so much that he fed it chicken-feed and kept it in a barn with other chickens, so it would never go hungry.
One day, a man passing by asked the owner why the eagle, proudest of all the birds, was living in a barn with chickens.
His owner said, “I love my eagle so much, I have given it chicken-feed every day and kept it safe in the barn. It no longer needs to hunt or fly.”
The man was curious at this. He wanted to know if the eagle really had lost its ability to fly. He picked up the eagle and said, “You belong to the sky and not to the earth. Stretch forth your wings and fly.”
The eagle gave him a curious look, jumped down from out of his hands, and went back to eat chicken-feed off the dirt.
The next day, the man tried again. He went to the roof of the house with the eagle and said, “You belong to the sky and not to the earth. Stretch forth your wings and fly.”
The eagle, fearing the height, wriggled free from the man, and jumped back down to the ground to be with the other chickens.
Finally, on the third day, the man took the eagle to the top of a mountain and said, “You belong to the sky and not to the earth. Stretch forth your wings and fly.”
The eagle, trembling but seeing no way down from the mountain, stretched his wings and flew. Slowly at first, but then up, up, and away towards the sun.
What’s the moral to this parable? The eagle had it in him all along. But his upbringing/environment and lack of belief in himself led to self-sabotage.
Below are some nuggets that I extracted from this story:
The farmer did not intentionally hinder the eagle, he did it out of love, to make sure he was cared for and had shelter. Nevertheless, his actions caused the eagle to adopt behaviors that were not part of his original make up.
In our own lives, we too can have family/friends who try to convince us that we should stay on a certain level or behave a certain way, while it may be said from a place of love, only God has the true blueprint for our lives.
The eagle adapted to an environment that he was never designed for. He had the ability to fly all along, but it took someone else to notice him, be persistent and take him completely out of his comfort zone. It wasn’t until he was on the mountain that he started experiencing his full potential.
Just like the eagle, we were made for so much more. Never allow man-made boxes, labels or controlled environments to confine you. Our potential is “built in”, determined by God before we were even born. So that means, we woke up fully equipped and amazing! And all it takes is faith and action to set in motion all of the wonderful things God placed inside of us!
Admitting that we self-sabotage is the first step, but we must also be willing to acknowledge the ways that we sabotage ourselves. God will help us challenge those behaviors but we must do the work to correct them. It is not a one and done process but requires consistency and commitment. When we refuse to change, we also choose to stay the same.
Let’s look at some ways that self-sabotage shows up in our lives:
In the words of Henry Ford, “Faith without action is delusion. Faith does not wait for miracles but produces them. If you think you can or if you think you can’t, you are right.”
Now let’s look at how we can overcome self-sabotage:
Overcoming self-sabotage requires that we be honest, intentional, persistent, and committed to change.
God created us for much more than we realize but we have to believe and take action. Just like the eagle, we too need to ask God to put us in a place that is totally uncomfortable and unfamiliar. A place that will cause us to give birth to our potential and maximize the gifts/abilities that He placed inside of us. He knows exactly what you are capable of, so walk close with him and trust him when he pushes you.
A couple years ago, I asked God to push me, to break down the wall that I had built to shield myself from the unknown. To let my norm become so unbearable that I would choose to embrace all that is within me. Well guess what? He did just that! And I nervously surrendered to the process. That’s how Party of ONE was born. You are reading my blogs today because I decided to believe God’s plan over what I felt or believed about myself. Blogging is new and totally unfamiliar to me. There are days that I doubt myself, second guess what I am writing or wonder if it even makes sense, LOL. But least I’m spreading my wings and starting to fly!
God is getting ready to push you too but don’t be afraid. He is right there with you. All that you need to live in purpose is already inside of you. Get ready to fly and soar to new heights in Him!
From one eagle to another, it’s time to spread your wings, let’s fly! We will grow as we go! ????

And you are so right, making ourselves a priority is quite difficult at times especially if you are used to encouraging others or being an empath. We can over give and not realize that we have depleted ourselves…so having balance is so necessary. It’s still an area of growth for me.
By maintaining a full cup it makes it easier on us…we can pour from our overflow and still feel replenished ourselves.
Thanks again for stopping by. I will send your gift card this weekend….perfect time for some warm yumminess! Take care!
This is such a great post #5 and #7 resonants with me because I feel like I have to do something and if I don’t focus hard enough I’ll avoid it and doubt that I can accomplish something.
Hi Nerlande,
Thanks so much for stopping by, reading the blog and leaving a comment. Happy to have you!
This is so true, sometimes when we feel like a task is too difficult, we can convince ourselves that we don’t have what it takes and also talk ourselves out of even trying. I have been there quite a few times myself…self doubt defeats us before we even get started.
In those times, we have to remind ourselves that we are capable of more than we know and challenges are there to stretch us and help us grow. We also have to remember that we can do ALL things through Christ who gives us strength. He loves to help us….especially when it’s hard!
Thanks again for stopping by….hope you come back next month! 🙂
Great read! I am a perfectionist and I know it is definitely something that I need to work on. My perfectionism in work has lead me to become a workaholic and someone who has missed more important “life” events than I can count. This pandemic has taught how to slow down and refocus on what is important to me – my family. So now when I find myself wanting everything to be perfect, I breathe and say, “Let Go and Let God”.
Hi Stacy,
Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your insight!
Boy, can I relate to everything that you have stated! Perfectionism dominated my life for a very long time, recently started being intentional about dismantling it from my life. It is an unnecessary pressure that weighs us down and we end up missing out on living and enjoying all that God has provided.
I am glad to know that you are focusing on what really matters…your family and that’s where the real joy and happiness lies.
Let Go and Let God…yep, a sure recipe for peace!
Thanks again for stopping by….appreciate you!

Lord have mercy!!! You are on my pew. I struggle with my weight, and after reading this, I don’t have to!!!
I HOLD THE KEY TO ME…I HOLD THE KEY TO ME…I HOLD THE KEY TO ME…
YES I blame everyone except the “man in the mirror” for not getting started, not having enough time, not eating the right foods, etc.!
I AM HOLDING ME UP, and that’s about to change!!!
Thank you for this powerful message…it most definitely resonates!!!!!
Hey Gloria!!
Thanks so much for stopping by and letting me know that I am not alone with this weight struggle! 🙂
I LOVE to eat….happy, mad, sad, glad and everything in between…good food will fix it! Especially fried foods or sugar for me! LOL
A couple of years ago, I started getting serious about my health. Once I made up my mind to hold myself accountable and stop blaming it on genetics, circumstances in my life and my love for food, things started to change…slowly but surely! I have lost about 47lbs and still have a few more to go but I feel so much better mentally, physically and emotionally. Food does not control my life like it used to. I have my moments but those days are few and far between.
You are so right….YOU hold the key! Time to use it to open a new door. Stay in the mirror as often as you need to. Tell yourself who you are becoming and don’t take no for an answer. You got this! I am sure of it!!
I appreciate you!
Leslie
Beautiful blog ???? we always have an inner strength that needs to be nourished through spirituality.
Hi Alexandra,
So true! The nourishment of our inner man is imperative. Thanks so much for sharing and stopping by! I appreciate you. I will send you an email with specifics so that I can get your gift card to you! 🙂
Oh my????????????????I thoroughly enjoyed reading this blog. It talks to me in so many ways, and admitting or acknowledging to myself that i do some of the things listed is very important to me….clearly the first step for me. I’m learning to put myself first, I have put myself last for so many years that it has become normal, but I’m learning and growing daily to put myself first without feeling bad about it????I’m definitely revering back to this blog as a tool to use daily. Thanks for the personal insight and being YOU, being able to see the pureness throughout this blog means so much to me and it’s definitely inspiring. Much success and keep the blogs coming ????????
Hey Ro,
Thanks for stopping by, reading the blog and sharing your insight…happy to have ya!
Glad to hear to that you are learning to put yourself first, that is something I did not start doing until several years ago and still have to remind myself often of how important it is.
Never feel guilty for taking care of YOU first, you need it, you deserve it and it helps to maintain your peace and sanity. When we are empty and still trying to meet the needs of everyone else, we pay the price. They’re good but we’re frazzled and burnt-out! People that truly want the best for us will understand when we say no or have to pause to replenish ourselves. Keep progressing, keep growing, keep choosing YOU!
Thanks for the love and encouragement. I am glad to know that you were blessed by what I shared. I celebrate and appreciate all that is uniquely YOU! 🙂
Love,
Leslie
Thank you so much for taking the time and hard work that you put into these blogs I love the story about the eagle thank you so much for this it really blessed me. I struggle a lot with overeating and realize the toll it has taken on my body now as I’m getting older and I am ready to make some changes …This was confirmation for me thank you so much!! Your Sis
Erica
Hi Erica,
Thanks for taking the time to read the blog and share your insight. I appreciate you for consistently being here and for your transparency.
Many of us can relate to the struggle with overeating and how it takes a toll on our health. I certainly can but the good news is that change is possible and once I got serious about getting healthy and took action…the results appeared. The fact that you have acknowledged that you need to change is the first step, set small goals and do something everyday that your future self will thank you for. It starts with retraining your mind and although it may be difficult, with God’s help you will reach your goal to become healthy. I am sure of it!! I certainly appreciate you!
Leslie
